Buchanan holds an M.A. in Philosophy from Northern Illinois University and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from UCLA. His dissertation was on the relationship between formal logic, knowledge, and virtue in Aristotle. He is also a luthier at Kevin Ryan Guitars.
